# Management Interface

Now that you know what the BMC is for, let's get you logged in. This chapter walks you through the steps to access the web interface for the first time, from finding the server to handling the initial login.

## **Default login credentials**

Your server's BMC comes with factory-default credentials. You'll need these for your first login.

* **URL**: `https://<Your-BMC-IP-Address>`
* **Username**: `root`
* **Password**: `0penBmc`

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Common Mistake: Is that a zero or an 'O'?**

The '0' in the default password `0penBmc` is a **zero**. This is a frequent source of login failures. It's highly recommended that you change this password immediately after your first successful login to enhance security.
{% endhint %}

## **Logging in for the first time**

Follow these steps to log into the BMC web interface.

1. Open a supported web browser and enter the BMC's IP address into the address bar. Make sure to use `https://`.

   ```
   https://10.0.174.13
   ```
2. You will likely see a "Your connection isn't private" warning. This is expected. The BMC uses a self-signed certificate by default, which browsers don't automatically trust. Click **Advanced**, and then select the option to proceed to the site (e.g., **Proceed to \<IP address> (unsafe)**).

3. On the login page, enter the default username and password.

4. Click **Log in**. You should now be on the main BMC dashboard.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Pro Tip: Bookmark the address**

Once you've confirmed the BMC's IP address, bookmark it in your browser. This saves you from having to look it up or type it in every time you need to manage the server.
{% endhint %}

## **Understanding session timeouts**

For security, the BMC web interface will automatically log you out after a period of inactivity (the default is typically 5-15 minutes).

If your session expires, you'll be redirected to the login page. Be aware that any unsaved configuration changes will be lost. To avoid this, it's a good practice to save your work frequently, especially when making critical changes.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://doc.engenius.ai/bmc-user-guide/getting-started/management-interface.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
